Image-map menu design considerations

  1. Hotspot shapes. Do you want your image-map hotspots to be rectangles or other shapes? For example, geographical areas such as countries are not rectangles. They often have very strange shapes and may even be discontinuous. (Discontinuous means: the hotspot is split up into a number of separate areas which act together).
  2. Image-map / drop-down menu hybrids. Image-maps are, by their nature, limited in scalability. Do you want to enhance the number of of links and functions your image-map can handle by having popup submenus attached to the hotspots? These popup submenus may, in turn, trigger further levels of submenus - how far do you need to go?
