Creating scrollbar images

In web design, scrollbars are frequently unpopular because their traditional appearance is unattractive. Java scrollbars (JDK 1.0.2) are even worse - clumsy blocks with limited configurability. In response to this, we created our own system, allowing you to totally redesign your own scrollbars (or borrow from us) and turn them into an artistic component of your web design.

All of the sliding menu applets use user-configurable scrollbars built from elements contained in external graphics files with a standard format. The standard format makes these scrollbars fully portable between applets, and we have a growing collection of scrollbar graphics ready and waiting to be fed easily into your applet. While the graphics are standard, the functionality of the scrollbars varies between the applets.

The scroll graphics file is a collection of six smaller images which are segmented and reconstructed within the applet. The six images are exactly square, aligned horizontally in the source graphic, and separated by one pixel (this is useful for using a contrasting colour to mark the edges of the images). Reconstruction of the scrollbar by the applet observes the standard transparency index of the applet, allowing the sliders to have special shapes. From left to right, the images are combined with the following functions:
  1. The top of the (vertical) scrollbar (flipped to left for horizontal scrolling)
  2. The slider for the (vertical) scrollbar
  3. The slider for the horizontal scrollbar, if present
  4. A filler square only required with both vertical and horizontal scrolling
  5. The bottom of the (vertical) scrollbar (flipped to right for horizontal scrolling)
  6. A background image that is tiled along the scrollbar for whatever length is required
