Activating and deactivating the Sun java virtual machine
Return to knowledge base directory

If you have installed the Sun java virtual machine on your Windows computer, it can be activated or deactivated for specific browsers by use of a special entry in the control panel.
  1. Open the Windows control panel
  2. Find and select an entry marked something like "Java Plug-in 1.3.0_xx" or "Java Plug-in 1.4.0"
  3. When the entry is selected, a dialog box marked "Java(TM) Plug-in Control Panel" will appear, with a lot of controls spread through several tabs. Leave most of the controls alone and switch to the tab marked "browser".
  4. In the "browser" tab, you can select which browsers to use the Sun java interpreter with. If you have both Internet Explorer and Netscape 6+ installed, you will be offered two options. If you only have one browser, only one option will be offered. We recommend that you check the Netscape 6 box and uncheck the Internet Explorer box.
  5. Click the apply button, close the dialog, close any browsers that were running, then restart the browsers for the new settings to take effect.
If you use the Sun java virtual machine for anything, you are strongly advised to upgrade to the latest version.
